Dr. John S. Hislop was an extraordinary spiritual seeker. From the age of 16 until his death at 90, he diligently sought spiritual truth whereever that search took him - whether to the meditation caves of Burma or the ashrams of India - always seeking an answer to the mystery of Man's purpose in the universe. His quest ended when he became the earnest devotee of Sathya Sai Baba of India, finding the spiritual centre of his life in the person and teachings of Sathya Sai Baba. Once he was convinced of the validity of those teachings, he was a tireless exponent of Sai Baba's spiritual philosophy. In 1975 he was instrumental in the establishing of Sai Organisation in the United States, which he headed for many years. He tirelessly criss-crossed the continents speaking of Sai Baba, culminating in his visits to New Zealand and Japan in 1993. This book is a compilation of the stories, miracles and philosophy of Sathya Sai Baba expounded in speeches Dr. Hislop gave over a periold of 25 years.
This book introduces the reader to the Teachings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba as they are reflected through the life and philosophy of an extraordinary man-Dr. John S.Hislop. In an age where rationality and materialism have run a rampant across the ethical consciousness of man, John S. Hislop spent most of his 90 years seeking spiritual answers to the mystery of human life. We believe that he found the answers before his departure. As he stated in his book, My Baba and I: "For myself, the inquiry started at age 16. Our Episcopal church had a play for its young people, and I had a part. In the midst of the play, a thought struck me with great force. I thought, 'These church people do not know what they are saying. Somewhere in the world there must be someone who knows the truth and can speak directly from that truth.' From that moment, the direction that my life would take was known to me, and whenever I would hear of a person who is reputed to know the truth of life, I would drop everything and go to him. I caused my saintly mother and father to lose sleep, for no matter what job I had, I would leave it and go. The conclusion: that I myself must find the truth within myself, was, to be sure, a concept totally unknown and far distant when I started my inquiry." With that declaration, John S. Hislop travelled to the far corners of the earth, delving deeply, over the years, into Buddhism. Theosophy, and Meditation always searching for spiritual Truth. Little did Dr. Hislop know, as he travelled from one spiritual center to another, that it would take fifty years before he would be led to the 20th Century's living Avatar Sri Sathya Sai Baba of India. Thus began the most exciting chapter of his life. From that moment to the end of his life, Dr. Hislop worked tirelessly as an exponent of Sai Baba's philosophy to the West. When Jack Hislop undertook his international tour of Sai Centers in 1993, he did not know he was then suffering from the illness that eventually ended his life. The devotion, the commitment, the certainty of the Sai message that he carried to those centers, overcame any bodily distress that an almost 90-year-old man would ordinarily experience during such travel. No bodily inconvenience could deter him from delivering Sathya Sai Baba's spiritual philosophy to those devotees eager to listen to Dr. Hislop's direct perceptions of the living Avatar. This book represents a fraction of the myriad speeches Dr. Hislop gave over the past twenty-five years. We want to thank the devotees from many countries who graciously sent tapes of the talks. Special praise must go to those devotees who worked for many hours transcribing, editing, and preparing the text. With great reverence, we offer our supreme love and gratitude to Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba for His inspiration and for His approval of this book.
