Foreword In Indian way of life, Dharma is a most dominant factor and it has its due significance and place in the Mimamsa school of philosophy which can be said as living source of achieving the worldly objectives and the supreme aim, the Moksa. After Jaimini and Sabara, Kumirila & Prabhakara are the most prominent Acaryas of the school and of them, Kumarila is highly known because of his Tantravarttika through which he has made several innovations in the field. Among the modern scholars who studied the system critically the names of Doctor Ganga Natha Jha, P. V. Kane and N.V. Thadani are highly worth mentioning.

As far as the Hindi writing on Mimämsä is concerned, present work, which is originally the thesis approved for the Ph. D. degree of the University of Delhi, supervised by the under signed is a commendable effort of Dr. Vinita Sinha who has studied the Smṛtipada of the Tantravärttika with her specific View on Pramana, Bauddha and the Jain texts, the ethics and the Kalpasūtras. The author has also taken into her deep consideration the significance of Grammer for Dharma, along with many other important subjects and thus on the whole, it can be unhesitatingly said that the present study finds a prominent place in to-day's Mimämsä literature. Due to her deligence and brilliant scholarship, I do hope that many more valuable works on Mimämsä will be brought out by Dr Vinita Sinha.
