About the Author Prof. Mohan Sundara Rajan is a science writer with over four decades of contributions in the print and electronic media. He has been writing and broadcasting about India's space efforts since the days of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. His first popular science book, Wonders of Space was highly commended by the legendary Arthur C. Clarke, who first envisaged the geostationary orbit, where today's INSATs are placed. He is the only Indian science writer selected to interact with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon and several American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. He has interviewed members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing; the Inter-Cosmos Council, Moscow; scientists of the European Space Agency in Paris, besides experts in India, Vienna, Germany and in the U.K. A senior member of the former Central Information Service of the Central government, he also served the Asian Development Bank, Manila as its Senior Editor. He teaches Journalism and Technology Communication as a visiting professor. He is the recipient of several awards including the National Award for Outstanding Effort in popular science; Science Communicators Award of the Karnataka Government; the P.N.Appusamy Award of the Tamil Academy of the S.R.M.University; and the Indian Nuclear Society's Science Communication Award.

Foreword Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values has become increasingly popular with the student community because of its researched publications on the culture and values as also on account of the Students' Interface Programmes conducted in different Educational Institutions both in Bengaluru and outside. The central theme of the publication project is Gandhian wisdom on various issues of contemporary relevance. But it is considered essential to include may other themes and subjects which have social and scientific relevance. Gandhiji himself and that he welcomed advancement of science and technology for solving our problems. That is the reason why some of outstanding scientists of the country were approached for writing about the achievements in the respective area of their specialization. I was happy to see the enthusiastic response from them to write for the young on scientific response from them to write for the young on scientific themes. I am grateful to the scholars who have obliged the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values with their contribution. There is no doubt that this book will give a new impetus to creative thinking in the country. The Centre is most grateful to the scholar and Science communicator Prof. Mohan Sundara Rajan for writing out the present book on "SPACE AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT".
