Bengal a land of plenty of mellow fruitfulness... praised, eulogized and enriched by early settlers. The spice route is a historical fact. They followed their sensory organs and came first in ones, twos, and later in hordes to avail of a trade in rich spices that was abundant in south India.
The Dutch came & settled in Srirampur. They were highly enamored of the place, imbibed a lot of the culture & cuisine. They left their mark by teaching us smoked sardines which we switched quickly to that glorious dish - "smoked hilsa". They taught us Danish pastry, we innovated with Dhakai Parathas a very flaky dry parantha, not baked but turned on the griddle.
So each of these settlers at the end of the spice route not only brought in their own customs, religious beliefs and cuisines, they also planted and grew their own crops which the Bengalis were quick to adapt as the soil being extremely fertile. So enjoy a treasury of recipes which are simple to cook yet delicious.
