The present book consists of a compre hensive English translation of the A-p'i-ta mo-fa-chieh-tsu-lun, the Chinese version by Hsüan-tsang, of the Abhidharma-Dhatukaya padasastra (Treatise on groups of Elements) brought out for the first time with intro duction, notes and Sanskrit-Chinese-English vocabulary. The original Sanskrit text composed more than 2000 years ago, is one of the fundamental books of the Sanskrit Abhidharma developed by the Sarvästivada sect of Buddhism in North India. The original text is lost and is preserved only in its Chinese version.
Dr. (Mrs.) Swati Ganguly obtained two M.A. degrees, one in Sanskrit from the University of Calcutta and the other in Asian Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagin, USA. She was awarded D. Phil in Sanskrit by the University of Calcutta.
