उपोद्घात पाणिनीय अष्टाध्यायी में प्रथम अध्याय मुख्य रूप से संज्ञाप्रकरण कहा जा सकता है, क्योंकि उसमे संज्ञासूत्र ही प्रमुख हैं। सिद्धान्तकौमुदी के संज्ञाप्रकरण में आचार्य भट्टोजि दीक्षित ने सभी संज्ञाओं को न ले कर कुछ संज्ञासूत्रों के आधार पर परिचयमात्र दिया है। प्रसङ्गानुसार अन्य संज्ञाएँ ग्रन्थ में आती जाएँगी। भट्टोजि दीक्षित की दृष्टि यह रही है कि माहेश्वर सूत्रों से लेकर सवर्णग्रहण सूत्र (अणुदित् सवर्णस्य चाप्रत्ययः) पर्यन्त जितनी संज्ञाएँ आ सकती हैं, उन को मुख्यतया हस्तामलक करा दिया जाय। इस सन्दर्भ को समझने के लिए पूर्वापरीभाव लेना आवश्यक होता है। महाभाष्यकार ने इस के पाँच सोपान दिये हैं- वर्णानामुपदेशस्तावत्, उपदेशोत्तरकालेत्संज्ञा, इत्संज्ञोत्तरकालः प्रत्याहारः, प्रत्याहारोत्तरकाला सवर्णसंज्ञा, सवर्णसंज्ञोत्तरकालं सवर्णग्रहणम्। अर्थात् सर्वप्रथम वर्षों के उपदेश का ज्ञान अपेक्षित है। वर्णज्ञान के पश्चात् इत्संज्ञा का क्रम आता है; क्योंकि स्वर या व्यञ्जन वर्षों की ही इत्संज्ञा की जाती है, जो वर्णज्ञान के विना नहीं समझी जा सकती। इस के लिए दो सूत्र दिये गये हैं-'उपदेशेऽ जनुनासिक इत्' और 'हलन्त्यम्'। इत् संज्ञा का ज्ञान हो जाने पर ही प्रत्याहार समझे जा सकते है, जिस के लिए 'आदिरन्त्येन सहेता' सूत्र है।
