Book Description
About the Book
Yāska's Nirukta is the oldest known Sanskrit text on etymology, philology, and semantics, functioning as a Vedanga to explain obscure Vedic words. Eminent scholar V. K. Rajwade edited a definitive critical edition of this ancient text, providing extensive introductions and notes that broke new ground in the scientific study of the Vedas. Nirukta is a systematic commentary on the Nighantu (a glossary of Vedic words). It is attributed to the ancient sage Yaska. Yaska advanced the revolutionary etymological theory that all nouns are derived from verbal roots (dhatus). He argued that every Vedic mantra has specific, traceable meanings and usages rather than being arbitrary. V.K. Rajwade's scholarly contribution critical editions: V. K. Rajwade's edition of Yaska's Nirukta (Volume 1) is a widely respected academic resource, published by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) in Pune. Rajwade's introductions are noted for pioneering modern critical approaches to Vedic studies. He offered both deep praise and rigorous critical analysis of Yāska's pioneering role as philologist.
