A prince and his beloved enjoy the summer dusk on the spacious terrace of the palace. The sky is turning darker by the minute. The luxuriant vegetation in the background adds to the dimness. The brightness of the painting is concentrated in the central theme. The magnificent swing hangs on an exquisitely carved, golden frame. Adding to its fine carving are golden peacocks and parrots, birds denoting love and fertility. And true to it love thrives under it. The prince is seated comfortably against the back, trying to win over his coy beloved. Fine clothing and rich ornaments tell of his status. The woman is seated on the edge, hesitatingly moving her arms towards him. The artist has laid emphasize on her simplicity.
The swing moves gently in the breeze. The maids in waiting stand on either side of the swing, resting against the pillars, waving flywhisks over the couple. They too are finely dressed; their expression can hardly contain the wish to run around the palace, sharing the gossip.
