Ganesha, lord of the ganas, is the most universally adored of all Hindu gods and his image is found in practically every part of India. In his baffling shape – his elephant headed, pot-bellied body – the god holds the secret of his origin.

Assuming the form of Bala Gopala, he stands in the stance of Krishna, holding the flute horizontally. Surmounting the head is a tiara–like crown. Ganesha also wears simple bracelets, armlets and anklets. He wears a short waist-cloth and a hanging shoulder cloth. Though in a frontal pose, his head is turned towards the left, the contorting twists lending to the grace of the posture. Ganesha as Bala-gopala is strangely bereft of heavy ornamentation usually associated with this form.

Between the purple background and the ochre Ganesha is an aura in brown and black. The foreground is again, brown and black. The artist has used dull and striking colours alternately, making it look simple and rich at the same time.
