The majestic Tanjore painting that you see here portrays Lord Kartikeya who is also known as Kumara and Murugan (in South India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, etc). He is the dutiful and noble son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, and being the killer of the demon Taraka, he is revered as the “God of War”. If you notice, you will find that every bit of this painting has been precisely embellished with pure gold coating studded with the sequences of tiny stones for an extra beautification. This is the characteristic feature of Tanjore style artwork which makes it stand out the ordinary ones.

Lord Kartikeya, the ever-youthful man, stands tall on an elevated platform surrounded by a beautifully carved Kirtimukham Prabhavali that shines throughout the painting. The lord is clad in a bright yellow dhoti down to his ankles and is elaborately adorned with several ornaments on his fair-complexioned body. A garland of rose flowers worn around his shoulders also adorn him beautifully. The warrior God is depicted holding the Javelin weapon in his right hand while he puts his left hand on his waist. A powerful weapon called Vel, which is a divine spear, is also carried by the lord. The way the artist has designed this painting with intricate detailing is undeniably praiseworthy. Also, the use of bright colors to make it attractive is another feature of Tanjore style artwork.
