16" Goddess Kali Standing on Lord Shiva | Brass Sculpture from Indonesia

$1129

Eyes gazing straight and mouth open as if to let out a war cry, an assurance for the good and a warning for the bad, Mahakali raises her ten armed hands with such divine force, as if to guard all ten directions (Dasa-Disha) all at once!

Her body is the color of smoke or Dhoomravarna, one that rises from the fire of cremation grounds, enveloping and overpowering everything that comes in its path.

Inspired by this powerful imagery of Mahakali, this hollow casted brass statue is a visual poetry written in praise of “Samara-Priya” Kali- she who takes delight in battles (Samara).

The pose of Shiva under her foot is supremely calm in contrast to the dynamism and drama of Mahakali’s form. His hands are spread on his sides and the stillness on his face conveys pure surrender. The serpent in Shiva’s neck raises his hood, baffled, eager to know who She is who authoritatively puts her foot on the chest of his Lord.

But Shiva knows. He knows when Mahakali is awakened, the best place to witness her divine play is at her feet.

A Powerful Symbol of Divine Energy: The Goddess Kali

This magnificent 16-inch brass sculpture depicts Kali, the Hindu goddess of time, power, and change, standing triumphantly over her consort, Shiva. Crafted in Indonesia using the ancient lost-wax casting method, this piece is a testament to both artistic skill and spiritual devotion. Kali, often portrayed as fierce and terrifying, represents the destructive aspect of the divine necessary for the cycle of creation and destruction inherent in the universe. Her dark complexion symbolizes the primordial void from which everything emerges. Her multiple arms wield various weapons, including the trident (trishul), a symbol of Shiva’s power, and a sword, representing the severance of attachments and illusion. The depiction of Kali standing on Shiva highlights her dominion over even the most powerful divine forces. It is a potent reminder that even destruction can serve a divine purpose.

The Art of Lost Wax Casting: A Timeless Tradition

The lost-wax casting technique, employed in the creation of this statue, is a testament to the enduring artistry of Indonesian bronzework. This ancient method involves creating a wax model of the sculpture, which is then coated in layers of clay. Once fired, the wax melts away, leaving a mold for molten brass to be poured into. The resulting sculpture is meticulously detailed, exhibiting the fluidity and grace of the original wax model. This technique, passed down through generations of artisans, ensures the unique character and quality of this breathtaking piece. The dark patina adds to the sculpture's mystique and beauty, further enhancing its spiritual significance. This intricate process results in a unique piece that is both aesthetically pleasing and culturally significant.

Kali: The Destroyer and Protector

The myths and legends surrounding Kali are as rich and complex as the goddess herself. Often depicted as a fearsome figure, her fury and destructive power represent the necessary annihilation that allows for renewal and rebirth. However, this fierceness is not simply wanton violence; it is the force that removes obstacles, breaks down destructive patterns, and ultimately protects devotees from harm. Tales of Kali describe her victories over demons and evil forces, ensuring dharma (righteousness) prevails. Her iconography, often including a garland of severed heads, symbolizes the destruction of ego and ignorance. This statue captures the powerful essence of Kali, her wild energy channeled into a captivating and awe-inspiring form. The serene yet powerful gaze of the goddess conveys a sense of profound wisdom and unwavering strength.

A Powerful Piece for Your Home or Collection

Beyond its spiritual significance, this 16-inch brass sculpture of Kali is a stunning work of art that will command attention wherever it is displayed. The detailed craftsmanship, the dark, rich patina of the brass, and the powerful imagery of Kali make it a captivating centerpiece. Its considerable size (16.0 x 12.0 x 8.5 inches) ensures it will make a substantial statement in any setting, adding an element of both elegance and spiritual weight to your home or collection. This piece, hand-crafted by skilled artisans, represents a potent combination of artistry, mythology, and spiritual devotion, making it a unique and valuable addition to any discerning collection.
