On the back of the rat, His vahana, dances the son of Shiva. The six arms of the shashabhujadhari motion about the chubby child’s torso. Usually held intact by the body of a snake coiled around it, in the murti that you see on this page it is a string of lotus petals. A lifelike elephant face completes the composition.

This wood-carved Ganesha murti borrows heavily from the temple architecture of ancient South India. There is a flat-topped plinth engraved with lotus petals. An archway with Kirtimukham at its zenith. At the base of one pillar is a bowlful of laddoos, at the base of the other is a devotee  bearing a basketful of them on His head.

Given the natural, organic medium, the work is a remarkably textured monotone. The natural texture of the wood reveals itself in the abstract gradient observable especially in the body of the vahana and the lotus petals along the archway.

The Divine Dancer and His Steed

This magnificent wooden sculpture captures the exuberant energy of Lord Ganesha in his dancing form, astride his beloved vahana, the mouse. Crafted with intricate detail and reverence, this piece is a testament to the artistry of South Indian wood carving. The dynamic pose of Ganesha, with his limbs in fluid motion, embodies the joy and rhythm of cosmic dance, often associated with Lord Shiva, Ganesha's father. The benevolent smile on his face, combined with his elephantine features, radiates wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune.

Symbolism and Sacred Stories

Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is one of the most revered deities in the Hindu pantheon. His story of being beheaded by Lord Shiva and then having an elephant head attached is well-known. Equally significant is his mount, the mouse, known as Mooshika. The mouse, a creature often associated with stealth and the ability to gnaw through anything, symbolizes Ganesha's power to overcome even the most formidable obstacles. It also represents desire and ego, which Ganesha, as the lord of wisdom, controls and tames. In this sculpture, the mouse is depicted with a dignified demeanor, adorned with a decorative saddle, highlighting its crucial role as Ganesha's divine vehicle. The detailed carvings around the central figures, including decorative arches and what appears to be a smaller attendant figure, add layers of visual richness and narrative depth, evoking the grandeur of temple architecture.

A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship

This substantial wooden sculpture is a remarkable display of traditional craftsmanship. The artist has skillfully brought the wood to life, imbuing it with a sense of movement and spirit. The fine details in the musculature of the mouse, the delicate jewelry adorning Ganesha, and the elaborate headdress all speak to the skill and patience of the artisan. The rich, warm tones of the wood lend a timeless quality to the piece, making it a captivating focal point for any space. Whether displayed in a spiritual setting, a collector's gallery, or as a statement piece in a contemporary home, this dancing Ganesha on his mouse is a profound expression of faith, art, and culture. It serves as a constant reminder of the blessings of wisdom, success, and the overcoming of challenges, all embodied in the joyous dance of this beloved deity.
