The Dakshinamurti Shiva is a lesser known aspect of Lord Shiva, usually revered as the destroyer from the creator-preserver-destroyer trinity. Captured in time when, during His Himalayan sojourn, He stopped to give sermon to a group of sages, the benign aspect of Destroyer is obvious from His composure of countenance, replete with the third eye. At that point in time, He was facing southwards or Dakshin, Sanskrit for both the direction in question and the concept of 'knowledge'. His frontal arms are in jnanamudra (preaching) and varadamudra (bestowing), while His posterior arms are holding an aksamala (a chain of His divine tears, the Hindu equivalent of a rosary) and a spark of agni (fire). His aureole is teeming with snakes and He is crushing beneath His feet the apasmarapurusa (symbol of ignorance, a stunted mortal). Do not miss the Ganga contained within His divine tresses.

The Embodiment of Divine Wisdom

This exquisite bronze statue captures the essence of Dakshinamurti, a revered form of Lord Shiva as the guru of yoga, music, and wisdom, expounding profound truths to his disciples. Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer in the Hindu trinity, is depicted here in a posture of serene contemplation and profound teaching. His four arms, each holding symbolic objects, signify his control over the cycles of creation, preservation, destruction, and liberation. The calm, compassionate expression on his face invites devotees to seek solace and enlightenment. ––––––––––––––––––––

A Symphony of Symbolism and Craftsmanship

The statue is intricately detailed, with Shiva seated on a textured rock, symbolizing the stillness and solidity of ultimate reality. A magnificent prabhavali, or halo, rises behind him, adorned with divine motifs that evoke the cosmic dance of creation. This prabhavali, often rendered with representations of leaves or flames, signifies Shiva's omnipresence and his role in the universe's ever-unfolding drama. The presence of disciples at his feet, some appearing enthralled by his discourse and others in humble submission, underscores Shiva's role as the ultimate teacher, dispelling ignorance and bestowing knowledge. This particular iconography draws from tales where sages and gods sought Shiva's guidance to understand the Vedas and the nature of existence. The art of bronze casting, particularly in Swamimalai, is a time-honored tradition, passed down through generations, ensuring that each piece is a testament to masterful artistry and devotion. The Panchaloha metal, an alloy of five sacred metals, further imbues the statue with spiritual significance, believed to possess auspicious properties. ––––––––––––––––––––

The Guru of Gurus

Dakshinamurti is often associated with the South, hence the name "Dakshina" meaning South, and "Murti" meaning form. It is believed that in this form, Shiva faces the South, the direction of Yama, the god of death, as if to subdue fear and mortality. He represents the stillness that underlies all movement, the silence from which all sound arises, and the ultimate knowledge that transcends the limitations of the material world. The disciples depicted are not merely students but represent the various seekers of truth, from enlightened beings to ordinary mortals, all drawn to the boundless wisdom of Shiva. The artful casting captures the divine grace and immense power of Lord Shiva, making this statue a profound focal point for meditation and spiritual contemplation. It serves as a constant reminder of the presence of divine wisdom in the universe and the path to inner peace and self-realization.
