Who is Tara?

In Tibetan Buddhism, Tara is one of the most beloved and revered deities, representing compassion, protection, and swiftness in answering prayers. She is known as the "Mother of Liberation," embodying the active, compassionate energy of all the Buddhas. Tara is not merely a single deity but a manifestation of enlightened energy in many forms, each with their specific attributes and purposes. The most well-known of these manifestations are the Green Tara and the White Tara. The story of Tara's origin is as beautiful as it is inspiring. It is said that in a distant eon, there lived a princess named Yeshe Dawa, which means "Moon of Wisdom." Profoundly moved by the suffering of sentient beings, she vowed to reach enlightenment for the benefit of all. When monks encouraged her to pray for rebirth as a man to achieve this goal, she vehemently refused. Princess Yeshe Dawa proclaimed that there was no reason why a woman could not attain enlightenment and that she would continue to appear in female form until samsara, the cycle of suffering, was emptied. After countless eons of practicing the Dharma, she attained enlightenment and became known as Tara.

Green Tara

Green Tara is the embodiment of active compassion and is often depicted in a posture of readiness, with one leg extended as if about to step down and assist those in need. Her right hand is in the varada mudra, the gesture of granting wishes, while her left hand holds the stem of a lotus flower, symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening. This exquisite statue captures the essence of Green Tara's dynamic energy and compassionate nature. Cast in sterling silver, this piece reflects her serene wisdom. The intricate details of her adornments, from her elaborate crown to her flowing robes, are meticulously crafted. The lotus pedestal upon which she sits represents the purity of her intentions and her ability to rise above the muddy waters of samsara.
