The Elephant-Headed God: A Tale of Devotion

The image before you is more than just a statue; it is a reminder of profound stories that resonate through generations. According to ancient Hindu scriptures, Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati. One of the most well-known tales recounts how Ganesha acquired his elephant head. Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste to guard her privacy while she bathed. When Shiva returned home, Ganesha, not recognizing him, prevented him from entering. In a fit of rage, Shiva severed Ganesha's head. Parvati was inconsolable, and Shiva, regretting his impulsive act, promised to restore their son to life. He instructed his ganas (attendants) to bring the head of the first being they encountered facing north. The ganas returned with the head of an elephant, which Shiva then placed upon Ganesha's body, bringing him back to life. The halo behind his head is called the Prabhamandala. It symbolizes the divine radiance and the sacred aura that surrounds him, representing the limitless knowledge, wisdom and the power of Ganesha.
