A Revered Sage

Behold this stone sculpture, an embodiment of the wisdom and spiritual power. The intricately carved details bring the subject to life, a testament to the sculptor's skill and devotion. The statue is made of durable stone, its textured surface hinting at the passage of time, adding to its gravitas and timeless appeal. The subtle grey color enhances the serene aura, inviting contemplation and inner peace. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this statue possesses a presence that speaks volumes about the profound depths of knowledge and the transformative power of spiritual discipline. The serene expression and elegant posture invite a sense of calm and introspection, making it a compelling addition to any sacred space.

The Serpent's Embrace: The Legend of Patanjali

This sculpture presents a divine figure, often identified as an incarnation of Adishesha, the divine serpent upon whom Lord Vishnu rests. The figure is depicted with a human upper body and a serpent's lower body, coiled elegantly at the base. Above his head, a multi-headed cobra forms a majestic hood, a symbol of protection and divine grace. Patanjali is considered the father of modern Yoga, as he systematized the yogic practices into a coherent system through his Yoga Sutras, a collection of 196 aphorisms. According to Hindu mythology, Patanjali is an incarnation of Adishesha, the serpent king. One legend says that Adishesha yearned to descend to earth to alleviate the suffering of humanity. He was granted his wish when Goddess Yogamaya asked him to be born as the son of Angiras and Gornika. As Gornika was performing Surya Namaskar, Adishesha fell into her open palms and thus was named Patanjali. The first part 'Pata' means falling and 'Anjali' means folded palms, thus Patanjali. The association with Adishesha highlights the powerful, transformative potential of Yoga, as well as the connection between the physical and spiritual realms. In this sculpture, Patanjali is shown with his hands in a gesture of prayer or teaching, suggesting the accessibility of his teachings and the universal nature of the path to enlightenment.

Symbolism and Dimensions

The four arms symbolize the different aspects of Patanjali’s teaching. One hand holds a conch shell, representing sound and divine creation, while another holds a chakra, symbolizing the wheel of time and the cycles of life. One hand is shown with the Mudra (hand gesture) of blessings and one is in Namaste Mudra. The snake form signifies the energy that lies dormant within each of us, the kundalini, which can be awakened through yoga. The dimensions of this stone sculpture are 10.5 x 5.5 x 3.0 inches, making it an ideal piece for personal altars, meditation rooms, or as a focal point in a yoga studio. Its presence will serve as a reminder of the ancient wisdom that can guide us on our path to well-being and self-realization.
