According to a famous local legend, when Lord Buddha and his followers faced a lack of clothes, they picked up rags and stitched them together to cover themselves at night. This is believed to be the earliest mention of the famous Kantha work of West Bengal. Locally, women used to stitch several layers of sarees into one cloth to use as a blanket.
