In this ever changing and wonderful universe, all of us are searching for happiness. Our life experience however, is interspersed with both happy moments and disappointments. A majority of our lives is spent in earning a living, the pursuit of pleasures and achievements and in supporting a family. Youth quickly passes away, leading to old age. Then there is death, always lurking around the corner. Are we not meant to be happy in life? Are we simply resigned to a life of ups and downs? The Truth, the scriptures say, is that we are created in God's image and are meant to experience supreme peace and infinite happiness. The question then is, how to gain that supreme peace?
The ancient Rishis and the great Seers, all have deeply investigated this paradox of life and have handed down to us the solution through the teachings of the Upanishads in the east and and other ancient masters in the west.
They tell us from their own experience, that supreme happiness is completely attainable by one and all, in this very life itself. The essence of the ancient teachings is the same. As the great sage Ashtavakra puts it "One only is, was and will be". Call that One as Brahman, or Atman or by any other name. That One alone exists or rather, that One is Existence-Consciousness itself. All these colorful names and forms in the universe are simply transitory appearances on that One Reality. Each one of us is one hundred percent exactly that One reality.
Even though this is the core of all spirituality most of us are not ready to grasp this Truth in its pure form. Spiritual masters like Amma, help us to realize this Truth, by holding our hand and gently guiding us one step at a time. It is my great pleasure to introduce this book of 70 Quotes of Amma, which is being released on the occasion of Amma's 70th birthday.
