Book Description
Introduction

The rapid Modernization has set a process of change in all aspect of life may it be personal, social or professional. Family system is also not unaffected by these changes. Social changes has reflected itself in the process of socialization, developmental goals, values and roles parents play in the life of children. The developing child now-a-days is more individualistic than the previous generation and asset for autonomy and personal space. Taken together these changes have made the task of parenting much more challenging than ever before. Now the parents are supposed to be open, friendly and flexible with children and to give enough space to child's views and interests. These things become especially important during adolescence which is the period of transition from a relatively dependent childhood to the social, psychological and economic self-sufficiency of adulthood. Adolescents' life is, full of opportunity to enter into new experience, to explore new relationship, to feel new resources of inner strength and ability (Jersild, 1963). However, the adjustment of adolescents depends in good measure on the quality of their relationship with their parents. Parents play a large role in the social and emotional behaviours an adolescent will possess during adolescence and later in life as well. Studies (Eisenberg, Shea, et al. 1991) demonstrate that parental contribution to the social and empathy related development of adolescents outweighs the contribution of genes. Adolescents' ability to experience, to decide and to control his own behaviour is dependent on many subtle and involuntary ways on his relationship and interaction with his parents. A parent- child interaction is a form of communication between a parent and a child; the combined reciprocal action of a parent and a child that has an effect on each other (Russo & Owens, 1982). Effective communication with adolescents can be challenging; but getting it right is important. According to The Psychology Foundation of Canada, (1974), "If parents want to influence their adolescents, parents have to be able to talk to them, hear them and get them to talk." Secure bonds between parents and their adolescent allow young people the freedom to grow and explore, knowing their home represent a safe place to which they can return when necessary.
