The formation and growth of any religion is bound to have a cultural background. This is revealed by the widespread interest in Lord Buddha and his philosophy with the result that Buddhism has now spread all over the world. Its inception in India was followed by its transmission to China and now in the 20th century, it has attracted followers all over the world, especially in the countries of Asia, Europe and America. Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Kapilavastu, Rajgir and Sarnath are the most important places in India and Nepal, associated with Lord Buddha.
But for a solid understanding of Buddhism in its various contemporary forms, it is very necessary to know and understand the basis and origins of the stories about the life of Shakamuni Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Alongside, we have also to understand the cultural and religious setting in India because of which the initial rise of Buddhism took place in the country.
As a matter of fact, we must appreciate and understand the close connection between the personal history of the founder and the religion which he established. While everyone knows the high standing of the family the nobility to which Gautam Buddha was born, on the other hand, the most important factor is how Shakamuni spurned all that glamour of being a crown prince and chose the path of the monastic system. So before studying a religion, we must understand the life of its founder.
Through the present book, the authors have tried to acquaint the readers with the life story of Gautama Buddha, the first humanist of history. This life story of the first Humanist in world history has been covered in 28 chapters. The birth and life in a palace is followed by flight in search of God.
