The present compilation of medicinal plants in dictionary form had been conceived by me for a very long time. Medicinal plants are a boon to human kind in a concealed but potent form. The quest for medicinal plants by man had a long antecedent history ever since the dawn of human civilization. Ethnobotany or tribal medicine or birth of Ayurveda dates back to thousands of years. Chemical compounds present in various plants are enormous and man has been tapping the medicinal uses of these compounds by various methods and curing many human diseases. In the present day, though allopathic medicines are greatly used by doctors, still specific diseases are cured only by natural herbal medicines, like jaundice and many more diseases. India and China are known for their antiquity in herbal medicine or ayurvedic medicine. There has been tremendous research going on to tap the natural resources in developing herbal medicine. It is with this purpose that the present compilation has been attempted to present all the available material on medicinal plants, their chemical constituents and their mode of action on man for specific diseases and their curative action. Botanical descriptions of each plant are avoided due to space limitations. Botanical descriptions can be had from different floras and it is only the expert in plant identification can identify a particular species. For medicinal purposes, the exact identification of the species is very important and not bookish knowledge. There is always the problem of identifying plants by Latin names by tribal people. Here only an expert in both botanical knowledge and knowledge in medicinal uses of plants can help for proper identification of the species with medicinal use. Even now, there are several species on earth unidentified for their correct medicinal use.
It is hoped that the present book 'Dictionary of Medicinal Plants' will be useful to doctors, pharmacists, chemists, industrialists, and students of botany to probe further in the identification of medicinal plants, their chemical constituents and their medicinal properties in curing certain specific diseases of man.
The present work, though not comprehensive, tries to present a large number of species available with medicinal use and represents a large extent of worked out examples.
