Balabhadra Jagannath Subhadram cha Sudarsana
Daru-Brahma swarupaya chaturdhamurtaye namah.
Why should you love Lord Jagannath? Why should you be His devotee having devout devotion? The answer is that He is the lone living God. Crores of devotees in the world are worshipping crores of deities having numerous names. But no other deity is called Jagannath. He is Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe. He creates, nourishes and destroys the Universe. No other deity does these or can do these. No other deity can be compared with Him.
His wooden image is incomplete, not at all beautiful for the ordinary eyes of the human beings. Manoj Das, a famous writer, writes - "But were the images really incomplete? They appear so. They even appear strange to the ordinary eye, but devotees see in them indescribable beauty and divine grandeur."
His round eyes like Sun and full-moon painted in black and white attract crores of devotees all over the world cutting across religious barriers. The mystery is that the devotees.
see Him as the most beautiful and charming image in the world. Many eminent Odiya Poets have also eulogized the divine beauty lying in the image of Lord Jagannath. The devotees find unforgettable and inexplicable peace after beholding His image.
It is an enigma. If a true devotee looks at Him, he generates a devotional sensation in his mind and He lords over his heart after which he forgets everything. This is the experience of each devotee who visits his magnificent shrine at Puri. A devotee comes to see Him with different desires to be fulfilled and prays Him with many prayers to please Him. But after looking at Him, he forgets to recollect the desires and is even unable to utter the prayers correctly. He fumbles, cries and leaves His shrine without getting anything visible to the ordinary eyes. Still crores of devotees are praying to Him in hundreds of Sri Jagannath temples erected in various countries of the world; irrespective of the fact that they profess different religions and faiths. They do not mind for the material gains. But they are satisfied with the indescribable spiritual gain which thrills them. They feel as if they have narrated all their sorrows before the Almighty and supreme Authority who will help them. They find in Him a towering authority who has the ability to solve their problems and to be a friend in need. They feel that He alone can release them from the worldly bondage.
