Book Description
About the Book
The Mission of Philosophy, first published in 1960, is an anthology of seven insightful essays on Indian philosophy by Prof. M. Hiriyanna. He explains the mission of philosophy, which focuses on getting rid of ignorance and developing a vision of one's true Self. He links philosophy neither to religion nor science, but instead, to common sense. In his view, philosophy visualizes the ideal and then offers the tools to attain it. Prof. Hiriyanna explains how the highest goal is to attain freedom even while being alive, the coveted state of jivanmukti. The strenuous discipline undertaken by the seeker becomes a part of the everyday conduct of the enlightened.

About the Author
Mysore Hiriyanna (1871-1950) was a well-known Sanskrit professor and an authority on Indian philosophy and aesthetics. Intimately familiar with the classics of Sanskrit and English, Hiriyanna devoted his life to the cause of making clear and accessible the wisdom of ancient India. He set the standard for scholars writing about Indian subjects in English. All through his life he remained a quiet, humble, disciplined, and altruistic person who primarily sought to better himself as a human being.
