Preface

The school as an institution exists to guide children in the development of skills, subject matter, attitudes and behaviour patterns essential for effective living in a particular society. The teacher, therefore, has two major tasks: to help children learn as efficiently as possible the subject-matter being studied and to help them acquire those desirable personal and social behaviour patterns. Where religious education is part of the curriculum, the teacher's function is to nurture the child in the proper relationship to God. Since children need the teacher's guidance to learn and since teaching may be defined as a set of actions directed to pupils, an important aim of educational psychology is to help teachers acquire understandings needed to guide children in their educational development. Teaching is based upon the concept that children can learn. Although many studies dealing with the learning ability of children at different maturational stages have been conducted, considerable theoretical differences exist about the relative importance of heredity and environment in learning. Despite numerous studies this problem is still unresolved. The viewpoint presented throughout this book, however, is that the child is a product of the interaction of the human organism and various environmental forces and conditions. This viewpoint emphasizes the role of both heredity and environment-not one to the exclusion of the other. Certain principles have emerged from this viewpoint, an understanding of which is essential for a successful educational program.
