This painting shows an elephant of majestic proportions walking slowly with a royal gait. Its trunk and ears have orange edges with darker lines and spots. It is richly bedecked with a multi-coloured brocade over blanket. Gold, ruby and enamel chains of various designs are around his body and forehead. Its trunk is lowered signaling docility. The tusks too are decorated and the forehead is also ornamented elaborately with a golden band having dangles.
The elephant depicted here reflects rare quality and character. Its traits are carefully studied and depicted, and it shows many stylistic features of the Akbari period. The background is left completely bare, so that full concentration is directed at the principal subject of the painting.
