A long war had been waged between the gods led by Indra, and the anti-gods. The king of the anti-gods, Mahisa, won the war and established himself in heaven. Then, guided by Siva and Vishnu, all the gods concentrated their powers to create Durga.

This six armed goddess Durga is seen here with the weapons of various gods, including the trident of Siva and the conch of Vishnu. Mahisa, whom she holds by the hair here, took many shapes to fight her and finally that of a buffalo, the symbol of death. She pierced the throat of the buffalo, and when Mahisa tried to escape from the animals body, she cut off his head. Standing atop the buffalo's body, she stands the winner, having restored the heavens to gods. Her posture exudes strength and confidence. The craftsman has created Mahisa, small in size to imply his low status compared to Durga. On the right side of the image is seated the lion, her vehicle. It is inconspicuous, but nevertheless there. The artist has tried to incorporate the two animals and Mahisa on a small pedestal. He has successfully managed to include everything associated with Mahisamardini, but cramped it in doing so. In dull bronze polish, it looks a magnificent piece.
