The Master of the Lotus

This exquisite brass statue embodies Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, a pivotal figure in Tibetan Buddhism. Revered as the "Second Buddha," Padmasambhava is not simply a historical figure, but a manifestation of enlightened wisdom who tamed the wild forces of Tibet and paved the way for the flourishing of Dharma. He is the Lotus-Born Guru, a name that speaks to his miraculous birth. According to legend, Padmasambhava didn't enter the world through a conventional birth. Instead, he miraculously appeared in a lotus blossom floating in Lake Dhanakosha, in the kingdom of Oddiyana. This miraculous birth, symbolizing purity and spiritual potential, set him apart from ordinary beings. From this moment forward he was destined to play an important role for Tibetan Buddism. The statue beautifully depicts Guru Rinpoche in a classic seated posture, embodying serenity and command. You can see in the piece the wisdom in his face. The dimensions of 15.5 x 8.5 x 5.5 inches make it a substantial and meaningful addition to your altar, meditation space, or home. The lustrous brass catches the light, enhancing the intricate details of the figure and radiating a sense of sacredness.

Iconography and Symbolism

Notice carefully the iconographic elements in this representation of Padmasambhava. Each item he holds, each gesture he makes, is laden with profound meaning. In his left hand, resting in his lap, he holds a skullcup filled with nectar, symbolizing the transformation of negative emotions into wisdom and the ultimate experience of bliss. In his right hand, he holds a vajra, representing the indestructible nature of enlightenment and the power to cut through ignorance. The vajra is a powerful ritual object in Vajrayana Buddhism, symbolizing skillful means and the ability to overcome obstacles. Leaning against his left shoulder is the khatvanga, a trident-like staff adorned with skulls and banners. The khatvanga represents Padmasambhava's consorts, Yeshe Tsogyal and Mandarava, embodying the union of wisdom and skillful means, and the realization of non-duality. Each element of this statue speaks to different aspects of Buddhist practice.

A Legacy of Wisdom and Power

The tales of Padmasambhava’s feats are numerous and inspiring. He subdued local deities and spirits that were hindering the spread of Buddhism in Tibet, binding them as protectors of the Dharma. He is credited with establishing the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, Samye, and transmitting the profound teachings of Vajrayana Buddhism. Many believe that Padmasambhava did not die, but instead departed to the Copper-Colored Mountain Paradise, where he continues to guide and inspire practitioners. Possessing a statue of Padmasambhava is more than acquiring a beautiful art object; it's connecting with a lineage of enlightened masters and invoking the blessings of wisdom, compassion, and transformative power. This statue will surely bring a spiritual presence to your home.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
