This book particularly deals with the history, culture and the issue of ethnic and identity movement of North- East India. As we all know though the issue of ethnicity or identity has been discussed widely by different people on different platforms still there are so many issues which are untouched or yet to discuss. The issues of the people of North-East India are crucial and distinctive, so it is very difficult to understand unlike other parts of the country. Therefore, this book tries to explore such issues which are very crucial especially from the North-East perspective. Through this book, we could have a deeper understanding of the issue and consensus associated with the ethnic resurgence and political movements of North-East India. Further, this book tries to focus on the challenges created by ethnic movements of North-East India before the centre. Preface

North East India as we know consists of eight states (Arunachal Pradesh. Assam, Manipur Meghalaya, Aizoram, Nagaland. Tripura, and Sikkim), and it is enclosed by Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (Tibet), and Myanmar A narrow corridor between Bhutan and Bangladesh provides the only overland connection between the North East Region and mainland India.

The population of the North-East consists of the original. indigenous inhabitants consist of various ethnic groups, including people from Tibet, Burma, Thailand and Bengal, who migrated into the region at different periods of history. Although there are migrants of long standing, who have become integrated into the local population over many years, an increasingly large inflow of recent migrants over a short period has caused friction with the local population. During the British colonial period and even after independence, the North-East adjoining China, has been a difficult frontier region.

Since the British colonial period, the North-East has been treated separately and differently from other regions of British India. The history of separation and isolation from the rest of India in the colonial period created a problem for the national formation and integration of independent India. As a result, we can see social-political disturbances, unrest and the emergence of so many separatist movements like Naga Movement, Bodo Movement and so on. Hence, this book tries to discuss such issues which are so crucial concerning to the people of North-East India. The main motive behind this book is to rethink about the ethnic and identity movement of the North-Eastern region.
