About the CD

Abida Parveen
The successor to the legacy of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Abida Parveen is regarded as one of the greatest singers Sufi culture has produces. No one it is believed can express Sufi Mysticism and its depth as mellifluously as Begum Abida Parveen. Her inspiration is the Sufi saint Shah Abdul Latif an 18th century poet and composer who blended folk music and classical raga in a style known as kafi. Abida Parveen primarily singes the structured poetic as well as the soulful ghazal genre of singing and improvisational style.

When she sings there is a will masti her as she raises her hands exulting to an invisible God. Her singing is an exquisite adventure into the music the lyric melody the improvisations the note arrangements passed down form older generations that hint at secrets from the beginning of time different from anything ever experienced.

Abida uses her gloriously honeyed voice as a warm agile instrument for instilling sorrow and joy strength and fragility in equal measure. Whether it is Sufi songs that she croons or ghazals that she so passionately renders it is the unconquerable quality of her voice and the heeling of enduring love that she instills within each word that coats her musical presentations with excellence.

Mirza Ghalib
Mirza Ghalib is a name that is synonymous with Urdu poetry. Born Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan Ghalib was a pen name he adopted. He was court poet to the Mughal emperor. Bahadur Shah Zafar and the last great classical and first modern poet of India.

Although Ghalib also wrote in Persian he is more famous for his Urdu ghazals. His body of work was not just reflective of the turbulent times that he wrote in but also resonated with beauty culture passion love and longing. His ghazals were unique as he wrote about all the phases of life. He was endowed with a passionate appreciation of life yet he deeply questioned the very fundamentals of faith and dogma. In keeping with the conventions of the classical ghazal in most of ghalib’s verses the identity and the gender of the beloved was undefined.

Ghalib also excelled in deeply introspective and philosophical verses. His poetry was full of intense grief and yearning for an earlier love affair death of an adopted son for the disappearance of court life and a world of beauty and reflection. His era was one of political religious and intellectual controversy when oriental concepts were invaded by western rationalism and the poetry was no primarily one of feeling but of sensuous expression of a uniquely perceptive original and synthesizing mind.
