'Aum', the most sacred sound, the syllable of which is found in the magical formulas contained in the Vedas and in the philosophical aphorism of the Upanishads.

Within the ambit of this syllable is the image of Shiva, the erotic ascetic. Representing the soul, the sun, the moon and the five elements earth, fire, water, wind and ether, Shiva is the totality of all manifestation. Shown in three quarter profile, he is in his most benevolent form. Serenity on his face, a grim seriousness in the unsmiling mouth; eyes reflecting a kind of inner tranquility is what makes Shiva's face resplendent here. His long entangled hair is knotted at the top with a crescent moon for ornamentation. Sliding around his neck and head are serpents – reptiles representing his sexual energy. In one hand is held the trident and the drum – the former depicting the three gunas and the latter representing the rhythm of cosmic creation. The right hand is held in abhaya mudra.

Enclosing the subtle blue hues in its fold is fiery orange with a profusion of black crackle.
