India has a very old tradition of hunting as royal sport and is a subject of several paintings. This ancient royal activity, is perhaps traceable to the need of villagers for protection against wild animals. In time, it became ritualized and took on symbolic meaning.

This dynamic painting on a rare stamped paper, shows a young prince astride a white steed galloping after a deer. The prince is attired in royal clothes and footwear, sporting a plumed turban. Other than a bow and arrows, he ahs a huge dagger tucked in his girdle. His face shows a calm expression, as though he is confident of himself. The horse on the other hand seems highly charged with its mouth open and hooves in the air. Its white body has patches of brown, which in no way undermine its beauty. Gold and enamel adore the horse's body and the over blanket covering the saddle adds to its royal appearance. The prince lets fly an arrow to bring down a swift deer. The deer who is in the process of a gallop is hit by the arrow in mid air.

The composition of the painting is powerful and is characterized by dignity and strength. Despite the absence of firm ground beneath or a relevant background, the picture is impressive, skillfully showing movement of the hunter and the hunted. The color is not jarring and the line is firm. The painting enhances the value of this antique stamp paper or vice versa.
