Hanuman, the demi-god of the Ramayana is considered divine and worshipped in many parts of India. He also finds place in village traditional and folk art forms. Here, the art of batik captures him in his iconic representation.

Hanuman was the son of Vayu by a Vanar or monkey mother. This Monkey leader rendered most valuable services to Rama. It was he who discovered Sita's abode and carried a message to her from Rama. It was he who set Lanka on fire. He had an amazing power and speed due to his father, which he devoted to the service of Rama for when his brother Lakshamana was wounded in a fight, and nothing else could restore him, Hanuman fled to the Himalayas from Lanka and returned almost immediately with the medicinal herbs not only the herbs but the entire hill on which it grew because he did not know one herb from another. His devotion to Lord Rama is exemplary.

Here, the Monkey god is shown wearing an elaborate crown and jewellery. He holds the mace in one hand and the hill containing herbs in another. He is shown leaping over the hills and rivers to reach his master. The earth depicted by yellow and green foliage lies between the pleasant blue of the sky above and the river below.

As this image depicts, Hanuman comes to the rescue of his devotees in the same manner, and removes their sorrows and troubles.
